How well are we prepared ?

            It is so heartbreaking to see the how Japan got impacted with Tsunami and earthquake. The unbelievable damage to a very well advanced country can be clearly be see in these pictures.  When you see this video  or another video  it scares the hell out to imagine how nature can get angry with mankind. My condolences to all the Japanese people who are going through this tragedy  :( .

     it sends shivers down my spine when i think "what if this kind of natural calamity hits India or even United states ". How well our countries are prepared to handle these tragic situations ?
  Northern california has earthquake threat from past several years and expectation is it can hit anytime. Are we prepared to handle basic water food and communication needs during time of crisis ? Our beloved phones and carriers loses signal now and then, and also sometimes it works only in some spots in homes and offices, will they be able to handle emergency communications ?
 Thinking about India further scares me. Indian govt has permitted construction of high rise apartment complexes without basic escape routes, and i dont think there are any earthquake alarming systems. If you ask govt why, you would hear an answer "India doesn't have earthquake threats and last time it hit was in Gujarat and after that we are fine".  How many people know what to do when they start feeling earthquake ? i am sure answer would be very few.
   India also has nuclear reactors and constructing more now. How safe are these ? is there any authority constantly monitoring and ensuring all safety practices are in place... ?

 If you are not aware of earth quake practices click here to know details. If you are educating others in a school or anywhere you can Click here to see Govt of US guidelines.

Thank you for reading and as always, i welcome your comments ..

Ok ... that exactly was my question... I am very worried about India 'cos most of the buildings do not follow any earthquake safety guidelines or are even crazily illegal for a million kind of violations... When I read that it was good building code that saved a million lives in Japan .... a shiver ran down my spine when I thot of India! ;-s

In India, atleast some of the corporates are taking some steps in training their employees on emergency evacuation and other safety measures. Though this might take some time for these people to spread the awareness among others but I welcome this initiative from them.
Preparedness was never part of the Indian Gov't strategy. But, I am sure that the nukes in India are safe as they are being monitored and mostly controlled by USA/FRANCE which is the main point of opposition by Left parties in India.

@Vinay.. so true

@sai : Not only corporate sector but govt should also start educating people coz % of Indian population who is in corporate sector is very less..
Even though nuclear deals are made by govt when it comes to implementation is done by private sector. Remember bhopal gas accident..
bottomline is Govt should go and double check now to make sure all safety regulations are in place.. If they are already, its well n good.. if not its time to start..

Very true. The first thing that crossed my mind was - What if this happens in India? I just hope that Indian govt. realizes the role it needs to play looking what just happened in Japan.
